53. Listen to Heart – Chanting is Better Than Chatting…

We all love to have a company. We never like staying alone. When we come together we can never be quiet. The talk starts on any topic. We talk for the sake of talking. We as human beings are more interested in others’ happening. The talk is generally about someone we know or politics or movies etc. This type of talking which is done for the heck of it is basically what I mean it as ‘chatting’. It is also termed as ‘gossip’. Gossip is idle talk or rumor, especially about personal or private affairs of others. Gossip has been researched in terms of its evolutionary psychology origins. This has found gossip to be an important means by which people can monitor cooperative reputations and so maintain widespread indirect reciprocity. Indirect reciprocity is a thought as "I help you and somebody else helps me." It refers to the spreading of dirt and misinformation or scandals.

Chatting is generally negative in nature. The effects are always negative.
·        Productivity of a person goes down
·        By chatting one wastes time
·        Trust is generally lost and morale gets eroded
·        Discussion is without facts and with lack of information.
·        Growing divisiveness among group “take sides,"
·        Hurt feelings and reputations,
·        Jeopardized chances for the gossipers' advancement as they are perceived as unprofessional
·        Attrition as good people leaves the group due to the unhealthy atmosphere

We should try to avoid chatting or gossiping
·        Rise above the gossip
·        Understand what causes the gossip
·        Be an inactive member if it cannot be avoided.
·        Allow for the gossip to go away on its own
·        If it persists, "gather facts and seek help."
·        Practice Chanting

The word ‘Chanting’ is derived from a French word ‘Chanter’. It is rhythmic speaking or singing of words or sounds, often primarily on one or two main pitches called reciting tones. Chanting is generally a spiritual practice. Chant practices vary. Tibetan Buddhist chant involves throat singing, where multiple pitches are produced by each performer. The concept of chanting mantras is of particular significance in many Hindu traditions and other closely related Dharmic Religions. India's bhakti devotional tradition centers on kirtan. The Hare Krishna movement is based especially on the chanting of Sanskrit Names of God in the Vaishnava tradition.

The sacred utterances or chanting of Sanskrit Mantras provide us with the power to attain our goals and lift ourselves from the ordinary to the higher level of consciousness. They give us the power to cure diseases; ward off evils; gain wealth; acquire supernatural powers; worship a deity for exalted communion and for attaining blissful state and attain liberation. Mantras are Vedic in origin. The teachings of the Vedas consist of various Mantric chants or hymns cognized by different seers or Rishis from the Cosmic Mind. Since the Vedas are impersonal and eternal, the exact historical date of the origin of Mantra chanting is hard to arrive at.
A Mantra chanted correctly or incorrectly, knowingly or unknowingly, carefully or carelessly, is sure to bear the desired result for physical and mental well-being. The glory of Mantra chanting cannot be established through reasoning and intellect. It can be experienced or realized only through devotion, faith and constant repetition of the Mantra. It is important to have complete faith in the recitation of Mantras. It is primarily through faith - aided by strong will - that one achieves one's goals. A sound body and calm mind are essential for the chanter of Mantras. Once you are free from all worries and have achieved stability in mind and body, you will derive maximum benefit through the recitation of Mantras. You must have a definite object in view and a strong will power to obtain the desired objective, and then direct that will to achieve the goal.

The technique of chanting is very simple. It is we who try to complex it. Practice chanting the way we want but do practice. Focus on the practice of chanting rather than focusing complexity of chanting.  This is a simple anytime, anywhere technique for energizing and centering yourself. Since this technique is to be practiced silently, you can do even when you are outdoors, or at work, or any time you are free for a few minutes. Sit comfortably with your eyes closed. Keep your body still and take a few deep breaths. Give your mind also some time to settle down. Now start chanting the mantra silently inside. There is no need to say the mantra aloud. Chant it to yourself, deeply and lengthily. Chant without moving your lips or tongue. Let each repetition bring you back to yourself. When you continue this for a while, you will suddenly realize that the chanting has fallen away, and the mind has become silent. These are beautiful moments. But almost as soon as you notice this, the thoughts will start again! Never mind, continue your chanting. Don’t focus on when the next silent moment is going to come, or it will never happen. Just enter into the chanting totally. Before you know it, the mind would have become still again. With repeated practice, you will be able to feel this silence within a few moments of chanting, and the silent intervals will also be longer.

It is believed and has been claimed by scientists that men speak around 7,000 words a day whereas women speak 20,000 words a day. So women speak more than the men in a day. I was trying to find a reason for minimum chanting of maha-mantra for 16 rounds a day. The maha-mantra has 16 words. If one chants for 1 round i.e. 108 beads it means he has spoken 1728 words. If it is practiced for 16 rounds it means he has spoken 27648 words. It is more than an average speaking of words by women also. So it could be one of the reasons to decide on for 16 rounds. Some people practices chanting for 4 times of 16 rounds i.e. 110592 words. If one has to speak then one should speak about the lord only.

One can select any mantra for chanting. We can take help and advice from his spiritual guru on the selection of mantra. According to me mantra does matter but what more matters is chanting of mantra. Chanting is suggested in all religion. It gives us positive energy. It allows us to stay away from chatting and gossiping thus to keep the negative vibration away. Chanting gives us positive energy and vibrations. It cleans our mind and heart and soul. Chanting allows us to bring positive change within ourselves. There are many people ask me the reason of my chanting and its benefits. I have strong belief that during my chanting process, I do not think negative about others. I avoid chatting and gossiping. I do not blame anyone during that time. I conclude that during that time I do not do any negative at least if not positive. I personally get strength and peace and power. I start believing more on myself. “Change yourself rather changing others….” through chanting. The mantra could be;
·        Om….
·        Om Ganpati Namah….
·        Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Ram Hare Ram Ram Ram Hare Hare…
·        Shree Radhe Shree Radhe Radhe Shree Radhe…
·        Hari Bol….
·        Radhe Radhe…
·        Ram Ram ….
·        Harihar Harihar….
·        Om Namo Shivai…
All Glories to Lord Krishna & All His Loving Devotees….. Hari Bol……
